Radiation Burns
Radiation burns are the body’s response to direct exposure to radiation that leads to tissue damage. The burns typically involve the outer layers of the skin however prolonged radiation exposure can cause damage to the body’s underlying tissues and include DNA damage leading to cancer.
The most common type of radiation burn is caused by excess skin exposure to UV light or solar radiation in the form of sunburn. Ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation from artificial tanning beds, thermal radiation, medical imaging tests such as x-rays, and radiation therapy for cancer treatment can also result in radiation burns. Up to 95% of patients receiving radiation for cancer experience a skin reaction involving reddened skin (erythema) around the damaged area referred to as radiation dermatitis.
